Joys Of Having A Basement Remodeling York PA

By Roger Gorman

For some reason, we Americans aren't that good about using our basements. They represent almost an entire extra floor of possibilities and what do we do with them, store stuff. Stuff we never use but could bring ourselves to get rid of.

It's not like we even go down there to look at it. What we should be doing is basement remodeling York PA to add functional space and maybe even increase the value of our house should we ever decide to sell it.

Because the lower floor is not part of the everyday flow of the household, it doesn't matter if it's a little eccentric compared to the rest of the decor. Here, you can afford to experiment with different arrangements and different applications of the space. If what you have in mind doesn't work out, try something else.

The basement is the perfect place to store the kids when they're home from school or when the weather isn't conducive to outdoor play. Make it habitable, of course. Put in some durable carpet and furnishings, tables and chairs, and whatever age-appropriate activities are suitable for the time. Find a place where they can help themselves to their own snacks and drinks. Put in a web cam or use a baby alarm that has a video facility just to keep an eye on things, especially if they go quiet all of a sudden.

Your basement can be converted to a game room, a great place for the kids to burn off energy when they're off school or the weather is too rough for playing outdoors. Bring in a ping-pong table, a dart board, table football and sturdy, second-hand furniture will keep them quiet for hours.

The Man Cave. A woman can learn a lot about a man from the things he puts into his personal sanctuary. Experts say that it is an expression of who they are inside. With the owner's permission, this space can double as a guest room, media room, or den/study/library. Under no circumstances should it be used to store fabric, crafting supplies or cleaning materials.

Happy Hour. The basement is a great place to install a wet bar and a music station for parties, informal gatherings or hanging out on a rainy day. Cellar temperatures (54-59F) are perfect for brewing beer, especially British-style real ale.

Whatever new use you plan for your newly remodeled cellar space, be it a study, a media center or a game room, if you can find space for a sofa bed the room can double as a guest bedroom. Later, you can put in an en-suite bathroom and/or kitchenette and Mom and/or Dad can move in to enjoy being retired and being close to the family.

Using a basement purely for additional storage space is a huge waste. If you can't bear to part with your belongings, that's what rafters are for. You can throw down a few sheets of plywood and store the boxes out of the way. There is so much more you can do with the extra space, and by smartening it up with just a minimum of effort, you might even add value to your house if you decide to sell it at a later date.
