Assembling A Disaster Survival Kit

By Ruthie Livingston

It is very important to be prepared for disaster as these situations are becoming more and more common in the current times. It is a sad fact that not many people give this much attention. In fact, according to research less than half of the population does not have a disaster kit and for those who have, they are lacking something or in a desperate shape. Many campaigns should be directed towards encouraging people to get disaster survival kit.

Cheap survival kits make the person believe that she or he is better prepared for anything. It is very important to confirm the worthiness of the supplies in case an emergency occurs. These situations are very bad at times and it would be so unfortunate for the materials to become dysfunctional right when you need them a lot.

Another common problem with the kits many people have is the lack of the basic supplies. Foodstuffs and water are very essential for survival following a disaster. It is thus vexing that many of the kits come with a deficiency of water and food supply. A remedy to these would be adding your own proteins bars which are high in calories. Life straw should be included to enable you to take water from any water body in case bottled water runs short during the disaster.

Cheaply made kits are a disaster by themselves. Before purchasing one, consider the quality of the materials it come with. If they look flimsy and cheap, you should look somewhere else. Also, consider how the materials have been sewn together. Even worse, some of kits have broken materials or some may be missing. Buying such kits does not make you better than the person who has no kit.

The kits made at home many a time do not live up to the recommended standards. They have the wrong supplies or worse still lack them completely. There have been cases of people buying these kits only to realize that even the most basic things like water and food are not present. Other times, the supplies it comes with a totally different from what was ordered. It is therefore good to check if the kit has all that was advertised before buying them.

You can avoid a lot of hassle by just making your kit. This way, you do not have to worry about the materials breaking down in when you need them the most or trying to find supplies you do not know where they are located. Just add one item every week in the kit starting with the most basic and before long it will be complete.

The supplies to be included in the kit are not that hard to get to. It is just that many people are lazy to go looking for them or are just plain ignorant. The local stores are very good places to get this materials and at a cheaper price. You may find that by building your own kit you end up spending less than if you had bought it already packed. Also, you are assured of the quality of the products and how to use them.

It can be a lot easier to get through an emergency situation if you have prepared well. Aid may take a while to arrive owing to how extensive some disaster can be. Preparing well can save your life and that of your friends.
