Solar Powered Flagpole Lightings

By Graham Swifts

A solar collector is a device for extracting the energy of the sun directly into a more usable or storable form. The energy in sunlight is in the form of electromagnetic radiation from the infrared (long) to the ultraviolet (short) wavelengths. The solar energy striking the earth's surface at any one time depends on weather conditions, as well as location and orientation of the surface, but overall, it averages about 1000 watts per square meter on a clear day with the surface directly perpendicular to the sun's rays. Solar collectors are the key component of active solar heating systems. Solar collectors gather the sun's energy, transform its radiation into heat, then transfer that heat to water, solar fluid, or air.

Solar collectors, in particular, flat panel solar collectors, are well-known devices which are used to absorb and transfer solar energy into a collection fluid. Principally, solar collectors consist of a blackened absorbing cylinder or plate contained in a housing which is frontally closed by a transparent window panel.

Solar lights produce no pollution and cause no harmful environmental effects. Solar-powered outdoor lighting is virtually maintenance-free since the batteries require no water or other regular services.

Solar lights work even after cloudy days. During daylight, even when overcast, the solar panels’ “solar generators” charge long-life batteries, which store the energy until needed, up to 5 days for Sol. Solar electricity is no longer a fringe idea. With photoelectric solar cells and a complete photovoltaic power system, your flagpole lighting can easily reduce the electricity consumption needed from the grid and can literally reverse the spin of your electrical meter by generating more energy than the amount you are consuming.

The U.S. Code states that: "It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed twenty-four hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness." Flagpole Lighting is ideal for lighting up flag poles so there is no longer the need to lower your flag at dusk anymore. You can install the light and panel at the bottom of the flag pole.

There is a barrage of cheap solar powered flagpole lightings being imported and sold, that do not comply with the flag statute. This is bad for a number of reasons. Imported stuff is cheaply made and more importantly, the designs, materials, colors, and methods do not compare well with the better quality, longer-lasting, and correctly designed flagpole lightings made by American manufacturers. The Flag Company Inc specialized in flags and flagpole lightings offered a special edition of solar powered flagpole lightings to provide innovative solutions for individual projects.
