By Carl Olson

Of the very many insects that are a nuisance to humans, termites are among the most troublesome. They are highly adapted insects and are widely distributed species. All types of termites feed on materials made of wood, in the process consuming cellulose and converting it into energy they require for a living. When considering termites control Jensen Beach residents should know that wooden objects are the ones at most risk.

The insects live in colonies and have a structured hierarchy. Every colony has different types of insects, each having a specific role. There are two main non-reproductive types which perform most functions. The soldiers are tasked with protecting the colony from predators and against outside attacks. Workers fulfill all other duties. There are many techniques of getting rid of termites from the compound.

Generally, methods of controlling termites are divided into non-repellent and repellent. There are various conventional techniques of eradicating them which involve deep drilling into the areas that are affected. Some methods on the other hand involve treating sections around next to affected areas. It is these areas that act as the entry points and sealing them ensures proper control. You need to determine the category of the termites in question to be able to effectively control them.

After determining the category of the insects, toxic or non-toxic techniques of eradication are employed. With toxic methods, there is treatment of affected areas with chemical compounds or through physical stresses. The chemicals used can be repellents or non-repellents. The most effective is the use of non-repellents. This will involve among other things the use of nematodes that feed on the insects. Other physical techniques involve the use of fumigants or subjecting areas infected to heat.

Baiting is another effective option that can be used for elimination of colonies on a permanent basis. With baiting, there is strategic placement of insect monitoring stations under the ground or in areas that are most infested. Baits come with some toxic substance that if mixed with appropriate materials, will eliminate the insects. The materials mixed with the bait include paper and any other palatable foods. These will attract them. Monitoring devices are strategically placed to check if there are termites around.

The damaged areas by termites need to be sealed off. This can be done using a caulking gun which deals off any small cracks or crevices around. Door and window frames also need to be attended to. In addition, you need to fill up cracks within the foundation and openings found around faucets and cables. You will also need to cover air vents and filters.
