Understand Gun Safety With Chicago IL Gun Violence Website

By Clayton Maske

If you own a firearm of any kind there are basic rules you must understand and follow in order to ensure your safety and the safety of those around you. Chicago IL gun violence is just one example of what can happen when guns are used as weapons. Regardless of your age and religious or political beliefs these fundamental steps will help ensure your protection.

There are 3 fundamental rules advocated by the NRA (National Rifle Association) for gun safety:1. Your finger must ALWAYS be kept off the trigger until you are ready to shoot. Hold a gun correctly by resting your finger either along the side of a gun, or upon the trigger guard. Never touch the trigger until you're ready to fire.

The person with the firearm should never, under any circumstances, point the weapon at another individual or in the direction of an unintended target. Accidents happen all the time, many with dire consequences. If you have a gun in your possession, it should be aimed at the ground.

Loaded guns should never be left unattended. If you are unsure about whether or not the weapon has bullets in its chamber, always presume it has. You should check this every time you pick up firearms. If you don't know how to check it, you probably don't need to be handling one.

By following these 3 rules, many injuries and fatal accidents can be avoided. In 2015 alone, 265 children picked up a gun and accidentally shot someone. Those accidental shots killed 83 people, according to the statistics of the organization "Everytown for Gun Safety", and 41 deaths were of the shooters themselves.

When you make the decision to purchase a firearm, you must make a personal commitment to become familiar with the basic safety rules. Your life and the lives of your family members may depend on it.
