Application of shoring and shielding as seen in excavation is to provide safety to trench workers. Shielding and shoring should not be confused for the same thing as they are very distinct. Shielding is concerned with protection of workers during collapse while shoring deals with prevention of actual collapsing. Concrete shores or falsework offer temporal support to concrete until it hardens enough to support required weight.

As much as timber remains the best material there are other materials that can serve the same purpose. Hydraulic shoring or aluminium sheeting is applicable at times given the ease with which they are installed. Wood is mainly used in this job since it is readily available and is flexible. The other eraosn giving timber an upper hand compared to other materials is that it can fit in different types of soil and as well as a variety of situations.

To conclude, shoring is best done by a skilled engineer or supervised by a seasoned installer. Softwood timbers should not be used in this work since they can break without warning. The fact that hardwood timber creaks when overloaded thus serving as warning is the reason why they are the best for this work.
