Ensure A Successful Westchester Bathroom Remodel With Some Advance Planning

By Martha Stevens

Although it may surprise a lot of people, some Westchester, NY home buyers deliberately choose an old home that needs a lot of work. They don't always do it because of the price, but rather because they want it to reflect their own personality and design choices. Many can only afford to renovate one or two rooms a year and have to decide which areas of the house require the most urgent attention. Since they have limited budgets, these homeowners make careful plans before beginning something as important as a Westchester bathroom remodel project.

Most people have a monthly budget they have to adhere to, but you might be surprised how many of those same people start a remodeling job without a clear idea of how much it is going to cost. A much better plan is to decide exactly what you want to accomplish, which fixtures must be replaced, and how far you can stretch the money you have to spend on the project.

Once you know what you want to do, you need to get all your materials, tools, and equipment in place. You should make sure your electric screwdriver is charged and you have enough nails, screws, and washers to finish each day's job. Nothing is more annoying than to be in the middle of hanging wallpaper and realize you have run out of adhesive.

It may seem surprising, but the creative use of lighting can make a big difference in the look of bathrooms. Old lanterns and oil lamps found at flea markets and yard sales can be turned into sconces, if you know something about rewiring and refurbishing. An antique lamp on top of a small night stand or shallow bookcase set into a corner or along a wall can provide light and be a great accent piece. A standing lamp will make an unusual and effective statement.

Installing a complete new shower is a big job, but if you decide to tackle it, you will probably be rewarded. It takes some careful planning to get the right tile and back splash design. You should work it out on paper before you start gluing the tiles onto the wall. Attention to detail is important and remembering to add an inset for soap, lotion, shampoo and conditioner will make a difference.

Most professionals suggest including one thing you want to splurge on with every remodeling job. It might be an antique bathtub or something much more affordable like a really nice sink and faucet set. Even if you have to sacrifice something else to make this purchase, you will notice the special touch every time you enter the room.

Don't be embarrassed to call in a professional if you get stuck and don't know how to proceed with an element of the remodeling. You might feel like you don't know enough to rewire an area or replace old pipes. Friends and relatives should be able to recommend someone, if you need help.

Some people get into the remodeling experience and find they have a real knack for design and renovation. Once they get started, they may look for other projects to challenge their new found creative streak.
