Kinds Of Handheld Foam Saw And Their Uses

By Anthony Allen

Some people have projects for work that uses foams which needed to be cut into shapes according to their needs and specifications. Using an ordinary cutter, saw, blade or other sharp tools is inadvisable because these materials may get contorted due to the texture. This is why specialized tools are needed in doing these tasks.

A taut thin metal wire is one thing that composed this material which are made usually from nichrome or stainless steel. This handheld foam saw will have its wire heated with an electrical resistance that vaporizes the material even before contact is made with it. You can buy these devices commercially or create one yourself according to your preferences and needs.

Two types of wire is used for this task which are preformed and tensioned. The former is shaped into certain forms with pliers or manually and is attached to a handle where the operator would guide it through the foam. Using this will enable you to create multiple copies of similar patterns which is helpful when your project calls for this.

The latter is held tightly by a frame which has springs and stainless steel with a single strand is usually used by people for this than nichrome. Those homemade uses leader wire for fishing or some musical instrument strings due to their availability and inexpensiveness. Those commercially made prefer alloy wires based on nickel though.

Under this type, different kinds of cutters are available depending on their structure and specific purpose. Handheld uses a short string and can be easily handled by the operator in cutting the foam according to what they need. This is what people commonly create at home by themselves because of its simplicity that enables anyone to do it.

Simple manual table cutter can be either horizontal or vertical and a table is used to secure or guide the foam. Vertical ones are utilized by hobbyists to cut small complex shapes such as letters that are only prismatic. Horizontal have the wire attached on tracks on either side which are movable upwards and downwards to cut exact sizes making it ideal for packaging and construction.

Template guided ones are those with a template on each side of foam block that has a string attached to them and guides in forming tapered or prismatic shapes. This could be manually moved with your hands or a pulley mechanism that has weights connected on each string ends. The operator skills and their templates affect how accurate the created patterns are.

Push through slicer have parallel tensioned wires attached to vertical or horizontal frames with even spaces between them. Large blocks are either pushed through on rollers or with gravity and are sliced into sheets sold for construction work. The strings are adjustable and replaceable which allows different thickness to be produced.

Computer numerically controlled guides a tensioned wire to form a prismatic or tapered shape on both sides of the block. Various components of the device affect the accuracy including how tight is the sting attachment. Some are offering lathe attachments which make spiral shapes cut possible.
