How To Stain Cedar Fence OK

By Harold Wood

Cedar wood is beautifully reddish and highly durable, resistant to insects and really attractive addition to any home. Of course, if you do not protect cedar wood outdoor surfaces, they will lose their appearance in time, becoming grey and unappealing. When you need to stain cedar fence OK home supply stores offer everything you might need for this job.

If you have just installed your fence, you should wait for about two months before applying the stain. About that long is needed for the wood to become dry enough inside. After that period, you can simply clean it with water. If there are some stains on it, you can remove them with very mild solution of bleach and water, one part of bleach and five parts of water. Wash it all out with water.

When it comes to different products appropriate for this purpose, the best solution is to choose transparent or semi-transparent stains that are oil based. This way the wood will be adequately protected, and this natural red color will remain more or less visible, as well as the wood structure. Semi-transparent products are far more durable, but they contain more color pigments.

The type of surface finishing will affect the total amount of coating mixture. Textured wood absorbs more liquid, but this might be an advantage, considering the level of protection as well as the durability. Smooth surfaces need less material for coating, but such coatings are less durable as well. So, spend more now and you won't have to repeat this so often.

Combine a roller and a brush for applying the product. Start with your roller, and make things perfect using a brush. Some places are hard to reach using a roller, and brush might be really helpful. Read the instructions, to make sure it is allowed to apply the second coat at once. Some products require additional drying time between the coats.

If your old cedar fence already became grey and unappealing, you should deep clean it first. The best equipment for this purpose is some high pressure washer. You don't have to buy it, if you don't have one. You can rent it in your nearest home supply store. It's not so expensive, and will save you a lot of trouble, when it comes to a fence cleaning.

Pressure-wash the entire surface evenly, until its natural reddish color is restored. Leave it to dry for a while, and you will be ready to start applying the first coat. Apply it generously, using a roller, and making some small corrections with a brush, to make sure all surfaces are completely covered.

This first coat should be perfectly dry before applying the second one. It will take for about twenty four hours. Now it's time to apply the second coat, again using a roller and a brush. Try to be generous again, although it won't be needed so much paint this time.Depending on the product type and the wood texture, this might be necessary to repeat every few years.

  1. color and grain of cedar are one of the things we like about this wood, and we're not going to cover that up with an opaque way-too-red not-at-all-cedar-looking coating. wood fence panels
