Generally, spray polyurethane foam or SPF is a mixture of two chemical compounds that are isocyanate chemical and polyol resins. When these two chemicals are mixed, they react vigorously and fast producing a foam that normally has the ability to expand to almost sixty times the volume of the mixture. This product is able to eliminate air infiltration, sealing and preventing air, as well as moisture penetration. The compound is opaque when it comes thermal radiations. This is because air will be the medium of transmission during radiation. However, there is no way this heat can pass through the seals and block made by the compound. Fluid thermal convection faces the same verdict as the others face. When applied in a house, it becomes airtight eliminating any opening.

The application of such compounds is in packaging. These material play key roles in product packaging mostly for fragile products that need to be shipped or transported. They usually are used in the transporting of electrical and electronic gadgets such as computers or other materials which require no disturbances for instance lamps, irregularly shaped commodities, and fossils. Also, they make such products fit their packaging in some customized manner from the sides, bottom or top. These objects are cushioned securely and uniformly.

It is also used in building and construction where it is used as the best alternative for fiberglass. The mixture is sprayed out of a gun-like sprayer and is used to block an opening found in your building. Whether in the roof concrete slabs or tiles, walls or any other part exposed to external atmosphere.

The benefits are such as cost saving in utility and energy consumption. It is as well used in designing and aesthetic enhancements in homes. Prevention of the moisture lessens mold, mildew, rotting and other factors that affect building walls and timber. It is associated with reduced noise pollution and the prevention of unintended sound transfers.

However, during spray, the emissions of the product can cause visual impairment and breathing difficulties. This is as a result of irritations from the isocyanate compound. Overexposure to this product is liable for causing asthma and gastrointestinal complications.
