How Kitchen Remodeling NYC Can Transform Your Home

By David Evans

People love eating out, especially in New York City, where every type of cuisine imaginable is available. But no matter how good the food at your local eatery is, there is nothing quite like a home-cooked meal. Unfortunately, some kitchens were put in almost as afterthoughts, giving you only the bare minimum of space and amenities. You can change that up, though with the help of a kitchen remodeling NYC contractor.

You should redo your kitchen because you want a bigger or more efficient space. Another great reason is to save money, but also to allow you to eat healthier. If you have allergies, you will want to control what goes into your food for safety, so you do not have an adverse reaction. One reason that not everyone thinks of is to add value to the apartment. Should you need to sell or rent out for profit later, you stand to make more money with an updated kitchen.

One of the first places you should change up during a remodel of any room, including the kitchen, is the walls. If you want a brighter room, consider lighter colors like crisp whites or buttery yellows. For moodier, darker moods, think of dark greys or even navy blue hues. As an alternative, wallpaper has a made a big comeback, with better adhesive and updated colors and patterns. You can even use wood or composite panels such as shiplap.

The floors are another big focus. Nothing makes a space look dingy like old, dirty tiles. Consider replacing them with something fresh, maybe even with a pattern to give your floors a more artistic look. Though hardwood is not common in the kitchen, it is another great idea because it is easy to clean and nice to look at. You can even go industrial and have concrete flooring installed.

Many NYC apartments are low on cabinet space or do not have any at all. If you have some, you can paint them or remove the doors to improve the look. In most cases, you will have to add new ones if you do not have any, or replace existing ones to give yourself space to put dry goods, plates and glasses among other items.

Many apartments come with older appliances that look like they came from a time machine. Upgrade these so that you get better use out of them, and a better overall look. A bonus of this is that today's appliances are more energy efficient to save money on your power bill.

Wide or long kitchens that have some excess space many benefit from the installation of a breakfast nook. This gives you a cozy place to enjoy coffee and breakfast, or any meal away from the more formal dining room setting.

To get started, you need a general contractor. Look online for a good ones, and make sure they have a good reputation through reviews. If you are getting any electrical work done, make sure they are licensed so that it is done properly. Most will give you a free initial consultation and estimate to see if they are a good fit for the job.
